CONTINUING AROUND THE BIG BEND
Tuff Canyon, (not to be confused with tough) is named for the rock type of which this canyon was made. Tuff is basically volcanic ash that was fused over time by compression and minerals to become a soft rock.
The Tuff Canyon hike is an easy walk located along the Ross Maxwell Scenic drive on the west side of the park. We stopped there on the way back from Elena Canyon. There are several hikes along this road but they will have to wait for the next visit. There just wasn't time to do everything.
Chisos Basin: the Lost Mine Trail
Deep in the heart of the park, the Chisos Basin is a jumping off point for several trails. We took two very nice day hikes from there and even had time to stop at the lodge for a beer afterward.
